Sights in Philippines

Here are more shots from our fun time in the Philippines.

Being Protestant ourselves and living in China, we have no opportunity to see Catholic churches or nuns!  (Growing up in rural South, I never KNEW a Catholic person until I went to college!)  So this may seem a strange picture, but it was  interesting to us. It was taken at a very old and interesting church made of coral stone, pictured below.

I didn’t believe it was coral stone until I found a part where the plaster was worn away. Sure enough, deep in there was the clear appearance of coral.  I can only imagine how much labor it took to cut and carry all that coral from the ocean to the land for a church.

The plaque from the church.  I was really pleased to take DD to see a Catholic church.  I think it will help her understand some of the history we study, especially when we get to the Middle Ages.  We just this week studied about Constantine converting to Christianity and then about Pope Leo (and his bishops and cardinals) scaring away Atilla the Hun.  Amazing story!

Cute or ugly?  What do you think?  We think it’s SO ugly that it’s actually cute.  This is a tarsier, the world’s smallest primate (according to everyone on Bohol, Philippines).  Really small — about the size of Sprite’s hand (age 7).

Here’s my handsome husband beside a sculpture at the historic site of a  blood compact made between Spanish explorers and the local Philippine rulers.

This was taken from a riverboat. There is a white cross far away on the hill.  I like this image with the palm trees, hills, and a cross.  Peaceful!

The Philippines are predominantly Catholic, and you see evidence of it everywhere. This shrine with the image of Baby Jesus was in an airport waiting lobby.  I have no idea why he is quite so dark!
