The Staff of Life — In Asia, that is not bread but RICE.

In China, you can buy many different types of rice. There is rice from all over the country as well as imported rice from other Asian countries. One of our favorites is Thai fragrant rice from Thailand. It smells and tastes great! But every family has their own favorite type of rice and will try to convince you that what they eat is the best.
You can buy it loose like you see in the bowls above (that’s the cheapest) or you can buy it already packaged like the bags in the front bottom row. Now you know why Asian people WASH their rice before cooking it – it’s been sitting out and actually needs to be cleaned.
In China, most everyone uses an electric rice cooker. They are almost fool-proof, and if I ever have to live long-term in USA, I’ll have to have one. The rice is perfect every time and the pot can keep it nicely warm for a long time.
And by the way, yes, the folks at the market think I’m insane to photograph rice. LOL! But hey, I see beauty all around me — even in RICE. And I have the “excuse” of being a “crazy foreigner,” so I can be a bit eccentric in their eyes.
