A blog reader commented that a lot seems to happen on the streets/sidewalks in China. Yes, that is true! You can buy anything outside on the sidewalks. You can get services on the sidewalks — shoeshines, haircuts. You even see people practicing Tai Qi or dancing outside in parks.
Here is another thing you see a lot: Men playing chess.

I have never seen women playing chess. It seems to be a man’s game here. And usually it’s older men. People in China retire at a MUCH earlier age than in USA. So you have very youthful retirees with a lot of time on their hands. I guess that chess is a good way to pass the day — cheap/free, interesting, social. (I don’t think all the men in these pictures have retired; many of them are too young!)

This is Chinese chess — different from international chess (which is played in the West). The strategy is similar, but as you can see, the pieces are quite different. Of course the rules are different as well.

Hi Jimmie,
Thanks for all you do…most of the time I feel totally overwhelmed when I see your lapbooks and what you do with your daughter. I’m teaching 4 kids / grades this year and it’s a serious juggling act. I know, you’ll tell me not to compare myself to you, because you’re teaching 1 child, but I sure would love to find time to do more; the time is simply not available. Ultimately I’m grateful for what I can do, and that I’m privileged to be able to homeschool!
