Funny English in XIAN

While in Xian, although it is quite a developed city as far as China is concerned, there was no shortage of funny English.

Where is this place located??

As you may guess, the word translated circumstance can also be translated environment. OOPS. When you know Chinese, you can understand the errors, but what I don’t understand is why native English speakers are not consulted about the wording on some of these signs. (Well, actually I do – it’s a face issue. But personally I think you lose more face with the crazy English than by asking for help.)

Take for example these signs at the site of the Terracotta Warriors. Thousands of foreigners see these signs each day and laugh at the crazy English.

Look at a sample of the 30 rules posted at a major tourist area in Xian. Could it possibly be more specific (and funny)?

Although I was quite curious, we didn’t stop to check out the star-style restroom.

This is my favorite. It was in the elevator of our hotel. Mullet need their own banquet room too, you know, for their many functions.

This sign may seem funny, but it teaches you something about travel (and life) in China. Nothing is free. Nothing is “included in the price.” That’s why the sign clearly states what is free. The entrance price is just that — paying to enter the facility. You often have to pay for the restroom, buy a snack to sit in the lounge area for a rest, and pay for explanations of the exhibits. What seems like a cheap ticket price ends up to be quite expensive after all the hidden costs are figured in.
