Street Vendors

You can buy so much just walking down the street. This particular area is well-known for its cheap and fresh produce. You never know what you’ll find for sale. Chinese people don’t shop with a grocery list like “we” do. They go see what’s fresh and what’s cheap, and that’s what they cook for dinner. I’ve adapted somewhat to this style of shopping and meal planning, but I still use a list for my non-food items; otherwise I’ll forget what to buy! As you can see, the amount of people is overwhelming. It can be so loud and distracting that I easily forget what I intended to purchase.

(I love the hands holding out cash in this shot! What do you think of that woman’s stare? You know she’s thinking, “That foreign woman with the devil eyes is taking a picture of people buying celery? What a kook!”)

Hi! Just looking through all the food entries. Why devil eyes?

My eyes are blue. Lots of Chinese people (like this woman) have never seen anyone with eyes other than brown/black. So my blue eyes are very, very strange to them (not to mention my height, my size, my hair, my nose, and so on…).
