Not the cleanest way to stay warm, but burning coal does work. It is also used for cooking at many of the streetside stalls.

On my trip to the market to buy vegetables, I saw this group of bei dous (day laborers) and others warming themselves over this can. It looked like they had started with some coal but had added garbage to keep the fire going. They were very friendly to me, and I really wanted to take their picture, but I feared offending them. As I was walking away, one of them called to me. So I went back and asked if I could take a picture. As you can see, they were more than willing!
Afterwards, some street vendors said, “What a strange foreigner! She takes pictures of THEM!” If nothing else, I hope that I somehow communicated that all people have value. ALL OF THEM. I know that many people cannot understand that concept. And it hurts me to realize that. I do not take pictures of them because I think they are freaks. I often refrain from taking pictures just because I don’t want to hurt their feelings. But if they are friendly and open towards me, I like to take a picture and then show it to them with the digital camera. I hope it makes them feel good.
