Tang Hu Lu – Candied Apples on a Stick

by Jimmie on December 10, 2007

We’re still in the USA, but here is another glimpse of our beloved China. We have plane tickets for our return, and I’m already organizing all the books and other goodies in our trunks and suitcases.

Those of you who have read Little Pear will recognize this classic Chinese treat.

Small apples (crabapples) are skewered and dipped in a candy coating. It’s delicious and very cheap — about 15 cents.

I saw some girls eating them and, wanting one for myself, I asked them where they bought them. They pointed down the street to a vendor who had them arranged on the back of his bike.

The white dots are puffed rice.

Other fruits are prepared in this way as well — strawberries, pineapple, kiwi. But the original version is what you see here.
