Nothing deep here. Just people — Chinese people that I pass as I walk about doing errands. Each person has a story. But I don’t know the story. I have only a snapshot from one moment of each person’s life.
Grandpa with his grandchild.
A young lady chopping hot peppers.
An old man selling knives at the bus stop.
China has 1.3 billion people. If you’ve not visited China, it’s hard to understand these kinds of numbers. This should help. I live in a “small” city of around four million. Many American states and European countries have fewer than 4 million people. Think of all of the people of South Carolina in one city. That’s what China is like all over.
Chinese people often say “too many people” when referring to their population. No, not too many. A lot, granted. But people are the greatest natural resource of China. This land is rich in men, women, and children.
