Sprite has been ten years old for some time now, and she’s acutely aware that 18 is the magic age of “adulthood” when you go off to college.
One morning I woke up to find a handmade pipe cleaner craft wrapped in a handwritten note that said,
I love you and hope for the last eight years to go slowly.
Love, Sprite
I do too, Sprite. You are a precious gift from the Father. I will always be your mother, and you’ll always be my child. But these remaining eight years are something special to cherish. Thank you for reminding me.

Oh goodness! Normally I remain upbeat about watching my kids grow and mature and think the fun is in the process, but that would have made me bawl my eyes out.
I used to subscribe to your old blog in a reader, somehow I missed that you were moving. Glad to have found you again

That is just about the sweetest thing I have ever heard coming from a child! So precious! My own daughter will be 8 this fall and I keep thinking “only ten more years, how sad”. You are right it is bittersweet. It makes me sad to think of her leaving the nest but makes me excited when I think of the wonderful young woman she is turning into.

That is absolutely adorable! I think of all the neat things that we will be able to do when my boys are older–like sitting around having adult conversations or helping with “big” problems like girlfriends and stuff. While I look forward to those “grown up” times to come, I do also hope the remaining years with my boys are slow.
Take lots of pictures and enjoy your time together!
What a precious moment. I think I would laugh and cry all at the same moment if I recieved a note like that. Precious, perfectly precious!

You are so blessed. What a great job you’ve done to raise such a great kid.
*deep breath*
Oh my goodness! That’s enough to bring tears to the eyes. What a sweetie.
On our daughter’s 9th she told me we were half done with her. This would be her last year of elementary school as 5th grade in NY is considered middle school. sad.
I said almost the same thing to my husband last night!
Our oldest (of 6) was 16 when the youngest was born. It always seemed as if we had a baby in the house. But, then he was 4…no new baby. Then he was in kindergarten, then a schooler. Now he’s 8. Already 8! Just last night I said I hope the next 10 years go s-l-o-w-l-y.
What a precious joy she is! Very thoughtful indeed. I think I would cry… the good kind of crying.

McGee is 9 and a half at the moment and he pointed out the other day that he is half way to grown up! I can’t believe half of it is gone already!!! I’m afraid to blink again or he will be getting married! Enjoy those years. We all need to make the most of every day. They really do go so fast! – Deedee
I’m getting caught up here and . . . OY! I’m not ready for that day to come! I enjoyed your other posts too but this one really struck my heart. Ah, children, please don’t grow up too fast! I’m glad she wants the years to linger. :0)

Jimmie,
I am living the “bonus” years with my oldest two. They are 22 and 23 and I know at some point they will move on from the nest. They decided to stay home and go to college locally so they could be a bigger part of the younger boys’ lives. That makes my heart swell when I think of it.
I have learned to cherish every day, even the hardest ones.
