Demon Gives Me a Haircut

Jimmie and a Student

One of the many things that I adore about living in China is having my hair washed at a hair salon. For less than $3 I can be pampered for over an hour with a luxurious hair wash and head massage. There are even reclining beds with sinks built in at one end. Then you can opt for a haircut, of course.

But this time I made a huge mistake. Basically I didn’t listen to Sprite. She warned me not to let “Demon” cut my hair. But “Demon” did such a good job for me last time. Since then he had cut Sprite’s hair and did not follow her requests. Instead, he gave her the haircut he wanted her to have. But I didn’t listen to Sprite.  “Of course, he’ll do what I want,”  I thought.  “I’m an adult. He did that to Sprite because she is a child.”

A trim turned into a disaster. I’ve never had such short hair. “Demon” even admitted that he didn’t give me what I asked for because “this haircut is more appropriate for you.”  I was in tears when I left the salon. I told “Demon” that I would just wear a hat all summer until it grew out. He thought I was kidding. I wasn’t.

No, the hairstylist’s name is not Demon, but it is somewhat similar in sound to a word that means evil spirit. When we met him, in fact, we were shocked to learn his name because we immediately thought of the word demon. Obviously it’s not an association that Chinese people make because of the different tones of the words. Anyway, he earned his nickname Demon with his poor customer satisfaction record among our family.

About a week after Demon’s disaster, I went to another salon to fix it a bit. It was a huge improvement. And although still short, at least the shape is better than the “mushroom head” that I had before. Yes, I’m not kidding. That’s the name of the hairstyle Demon gave me. Imagine a feminine bowl cut with hair on the neck. I shudder to even think of it.  I dare not show the mushroom head hairstyle. But here’s a shot of me soon after the repair job. I’m a bit tousled from the wind, but you can get the  main idea.

As my mom always says, “It’s just hair. It will grow.” And it is truly cool in the summer heat.

So, how about you? Has “Demon” ever cut your hair? Share your hair disasters.

My sister got some frosting kits at Big Lots (Clearance store) and we were so excited to color our hair at bargain prices.
The hole in the caps leaked and the colorant was weak so we ended up with orange polka dots all over our heads.
As fortune would have it — punk was in style so we feel back on that being our style.

Well, mine isn’t quite that bad! I just got a CHOP job (think Liza Minelli) when I was eight months pregnant, so the 50 pounds I had gained were even more obvious because I had no hair to “balance it out.” I was mortified. I think your “fixed” haircut looks cute, btw!

Awww Jimmie I know your pain!!
I was feeling really down….. my first child was 5 months …. so hubby decided to take me to a hair salon to cheer me up. I asked them to layer my very long hair …. well they chopped it all off, and it looked hideous!! I walked out of the salon crying and feeling 100 time worse!
(BTW I wasn’t able to view your “fixed haircut” pic!)

When I was in college, it was rare for me to get a haircut. But when I did, I went to SuperCuts and got a non-super haircut. One time I asked for layers. When I got back to my house, my roommate looked at me and gasped “What happened to your hair?!!!” It was soooo bad. I looked like I had a mushroom hat of hair on top of my regular hair. I went back in tears asking them to “fix” it. I don’t think I have ever recovered.

I have been cutting my own hair for a long time. When I was thirteen I trimed my own bangs right before my mom took us to get our pictures taken. Usually I did fine, but this time they were very SHORT. And I have the goofy photos to prove it.

I think your fixed haircut loks great though!

Oh no! What a story! But you had such a great attitude towards it!

A great hairstyle really does make a woman feel confident. A bad one? Ugh…

Dana, your comment made me laugh! You are so right about hair balancing your body. I can’t imagine short hair when pregnant!! But at least you have a great excuse for all the weight. PS I gained 60 lbs total with Sprite!

Yep…plenty of “not so good” hair cuts in my life time. I have stick straight hair and the stylist are always trying to make it fuller with layers. That just makes it look choppy. Even had the “mushroom” cut. Aweful!!!! Then there was the cut that made me look like a boy. I wore a hat the entire summer! Anyway I have learned to trust my gals choice of hair stylist over the years. They are usually right!
BTW your cut looks good! I know you don’t like it but it really is doable till it grows out!

Compared to mushroom head, yes this is very doable! Thanks for sharing your disasters, Tina! :-) Misery loves company.

I had a haircut from someone I trusted that made me look like a man. I cried and cried. Everything my husband said made it worse. I felt so not feminine and truly ugly for the first time in my life.

It took me three years to go back to a hair salon. I let me hair grow to the middle of my back before I ever trusted anyone to cut it again. I still have trouble with trusting someone with my hair.

No way!

How presumptious! I cannot believe a hair person would do such an audacious thing. I would *never* go back.

When my now 22 yo dd was 11 I took her to get a “trim”. It was the end of a long day, with my husband serving overseas, I was “single momming it”. I had left my very hyper (albeit sweet) 4 yo dd (our homeschooler) with my SIL. Sorry, I digress; but, anyway I had a terrible headache and had my eyes closed. Our “demon” just cut away and dd either didn’t realize or was to shy to speak up. She ended up with a haircut similar to what you describe. She was horrified and was in tears. To this day when I look back at snapshots during the time her hair was growing out, I feel guilty for not being more attentive. And she is VERY particular who gets their scissors on her hair!
