A Beetle and a Boatride

by Jimmie on August 29, 2009

We recently took a ride in a boat somewhat like this. A woman paddled at the rear.

It was quiet and green:  two of my favorite sensations.

We saw a monk paddling a smaller boat to his temple. My husband asked him to show us some kung fu. The monk, a young boy in his teens, responded calmly, “Kung fu is not meant for performances.” (Yeah, tell that to Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee!)

I forgot the bug repellent, and we were almost miserable with itchy legs and arms. But one bug caught our fancy. Partway on the trip, we stopped for a “shopping opportunity” where we bought this fellow for 1 RMB.

The bottom section of his leg had been snapped off and this stick was glued there instead. (Yes, that made us very sad.)

The idea is that when the beetle flies to escape, he merely spins in circles. So you’ve got a little pet on a stick.

Quite fascinating to watch, but we pitied the poor thing and set it free.

Where bad beetles end up — in the snack bowl. You could buy a pet beetle or a beetle snack. A local man ate one just to show me how to do it. He bit off the body portion and discarded the head. He said it was tasty. I chose to take his word for it. We didn’t buy any beetle snacks.

MMMmmm, just kidding! ;) Interesting about the pet bug on a stick. Just looking at the picture made me want to cut the stick to at least be even with the leg.

I wonder who came up with the idea of a beetle on a stick? Was it a child or a father trying to entertain his child? Fascinating. I don’t know why that kinda makes me sad for the bug, especially since I know that if it was in front of me I’d probably just squish it!

Beetle snacks? No thank you, I just had lunch.

The bug on a stick is so sad… (it looks like some kind of weevil to me). And, glad you didn’t try any of those beetle snacks. What a different culture you live in!

This is so fascinating. I wouldn’t try the beetle snacks either that’s for sure. Beetle on a stick is the weirdest pet I think I have heard of. :)

Unbelievable how different their culture is from ours here in the states. I would not have tried the snacks either.

What a hoot! You can either adopt one or eat one! LOL! Must be my wacky sense of humor but that makes me laugh! Very kind of you to set the beetle free. That must be the difference between boys and girls. My sons would have played with the thing for hours and never thought about ‘the poor bug’ at all! Thanks for sharing.

My little guy just found a weevil today that he begged to bring home for a pet. It is presently in a little terrarium with a little bottle cap of water and a few tasty morsels of food. He loves beetles of all sorts. The weevil on the stick IS sad… I’m glad you let it go. Like Maureen, I probably would have broke the stick as well.

These are definitely the weirdest snacks I’ve seen so far! I definitely avoid the street food carts that feature them, not even wanting them to be cooked in the same oil that cooks my tofu!
