Hobnobbing at the Education Conference

We recently had a wonderful opportunity to attend an education (homeschooling) conference especially for foreigners living in Asia. For me the most valuable parts were interacting with other homeschool moms and having Sprite tested.

Here I am with Janna Gilbert from The Potter’s School.

I am seriously considering having Sprite take classes from their interactive, online school.  I may even put her in a writing class next fall for 6th grade. (Potter’s School has classes for 6th – 12th grades.)

And here is my husband with Jay Wile, the author of the Apologia curriculum.

Jim and Jay Wile

We thoroughly enjoyed his lectures on science.  Interestingly, he does very little promoting of his curriculum in his presentations. For now, I’m still avoiding the textbook route for science. But after meeting Jay, I can understand why his books are so popular. More than likely we’ll use his materials once we get to higher levels.

We love Apologia Science! For the elementary program we read it aloud and do the experiments on the weekends with Dad.

BTW, we’re in Xi’an now freezing our tails off! The apartment we are in has heat, but no hot water…oh the joys of China!

Hey, J’s mom, her hubby is the one in the black t-shirt and he always has that smile on his face. He’s a super guy. ;) And Jimmie is pretty special too! :)

SO GLAD you got some time away to refresh and recharge. I’ve looked at TPS myself. I’d love to hear your impressions of it all…..

I used The Potter School with my 2 oldest and were quite pleased with them. Their science and math stuff was particularly good.

My boy’s are LOVING Jay Wile’s books. We used the elementary Apologia books, but they weren’t really into science until they started the General Science book. My oldest actually asked for nothing but “science supplies” for Christmas this year- vinegar, yeast, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, tums, test tubes, etc. He’s had so much fun recreating the experimens from his science books and doing his own. I currently have all kinds of weird concoctions sitting on my kitchen counter. :-) We highly recommend Wile’s books.
