Suffering in China (with great food)

by Jimmie Lanley on February 8, 2010

Yeah, don’t you feel sorry for me? I’m just suffering here in China with nothing decent to eat. (That’s sarcasm.)

A pickled turnip dish. Yummy!

jelly fish and cilantro salad

Cilantro, jellyfish, and mushrooms are the main ingredients in this very tasty salad.

pork and fish fried fish

Amazingly, I didn’t even like seafood until I moved to China. That’s when I started to eat fresh seafood, cooked well. Then I discovered how wonderful it is.

Do you like fish and seafood? Would you try the jellyfish salad or just stick with the crispy fried fish?

I have to say, the turnip dish looks scary and I really don’t think I would eat the jellyfish!!

Definitely would try the turnips.

Actually, the part of the jellyfish salad that turns ME off is those giant cilantro stems! If I could pretend the jellyfish was a mushroom, I’d probably be ok.

BTW, could you identify the other dishes? Especially the one under the shrimp with the green onions. Is that pork?

I’m not as adventuresome as I once was…LOL.
So I’d probably just stick with the crispy fish. I’m not a big fan of seafood anymore, and I no longer eat shrimp.. alas, it used to be a favorite. The pickled turnip dish looks fairly harmless, ha, ha, so I’d probably at least try it. :) Glad you have a nice variety to choose from though, looks like quite a spread!!

Ewww! Um, no. We follow the dietary commands in the Bible and don’t even consider most of that to be food! It ranks right up there with eating rats, dogs or vultures. Um, no thank you!

Sorry to say that I would not eat either….I am so close to being a vegetarian that neither even sounds good. I could be persuaded to try the turnip. If you left off the jellyfish, I would eat the mushrooms and cilantro! Sigh, I am not a very good example to my children but they don’t seem to have picked up my very picky eating habits. They take after their father who will eat anything but lima beans and brussel sprouts. :)

I might try the jelly fish (maybe, possibly) but I really can’t stand cilantro, so I think I’d prefer the crispy fish. Actually, I’m not a big fan of seafood even though I grew up eating a lot of it.

I agree with you. I didn’t really like fish until going to Asia. I remember going back to the USA and disappointed when I ordered fish. I owe you an email.

Oh, I despise seafood in all forms. I seriously don’t know what I’d do. Probably, finally lose some weight! ;-)

Wonderful Post as it has generated a lot of comments.

I have to say, having spent a semester in China (a long, long time ago), the Chinese have a wonderful way of making even the most initially unappetizing ingredient either tasty or innocuous. I wonder how many of us would enjoy the dishes pictured if not told what was lurking in the mix.

Thanks for the fun look into some interesting cuisine.

I like most seafood (except lobster), and I’m not a picky eater at all, but unless I were ignorant of the ingredients, I’d have to pass on the jellyfish. (Even if it were smothered in cilantro which I love.) I used to eat seaweed salad all the time when we lived down the street from a Thai restaurant. You’re definitely spoiled, Jimmie!

Well, in my two weeks in Guangzhou, helping my friend pick up her daughter, I did eat swan, though when the ladle in the soup toureen pulled up a tiny whole octopus, I did put it back and dug around some more for something else!

If I were at that spread, I’d follow my nose and give it a try if I were choosing food myself, if I were a guest of someone, I’d do the prayer – Lord, I’ll get it down if you keep it down.

Here in New England, you can get lovely sea food, though usually it’s breaded and fried.

Count me in!

I never disliked seafood before coming to Japan (or what passes for it sometimes in the US!), but living here has opened my eyes to the almost endless and delicious was to prepare it. There is just no substitute for really fresh seafood.

I love jellyfish, it’s crunchy and tastes great with cilantro. Have you tried dry candied spicy jellyfish before, try some when you’re in Malaysia, really tasty.

As someone with an Asian mother I have to ask you, do you eat the fish eyes too?

I remember fights breaking out over the fish eyes in my household! LOL

I would try the jellyfish. I’ve never had jellyfish. I love sea food and I love sea urchin. What does Jellyfish taste like? What can you compare it too? Is it as chewy as octopus?

I think as long as I didn’t know what I was eating, I’d probably do just fine… :) jellyfish doesn’t sound nice to me though. I never was a big seafood fan, and would only do certain fish and chips until coming to Peru where they make very yummy fish dishes… I even like ceviche now (raw fish cured in lemon/onion).

Hi Karin,
Jellyfish doesn’t taste like octopus at all, the “hat” is crunchy and the tentacles are softer, normally used in salads and eatea cold. The more you cook the more it shrink and rubbery.
