Tennessee is so beautiful. I constantly stare at the blue skies, drinking in the color like it’s water.
Look at these clouds.
It’s like they’re painted into the sky. We never (NEVER) see this in China. Instead, there is a chronic gray haze. So even driving down the highway becomes a visual feast for us.
Speaking of feast, we had a lunch cookout in the park.
(Maybe boring for you, but very novel for us.)
Sprite couldn’t remember ever cooking hotdogs and hamburgers over a charcoal fire.
I was happy about not having to grind the meat or make homemade buns. Cooking in USA is so easy!
We took a trip to Ohio to visit some friends. (Actually we are still in OH.)
Since our route took us through Nashville, TN, we visited Andrew Jackson’s home — The Hermitage.
This is Jackson’s tomb in the garden outside his home.

This was a cabin on the property. The actual Hermitage was under renovation, so we couldn’t take any good shots of it. (But I bought some nice postcards instead.)
In Columbus, OH we visited COSI, the science museum. We kept pronouncing it “cozy.” Then at the end of our visit, as the museum was closing we heard an announcement that gave us the correct pronunciation — co-SCI (as in science). Oops! But “COZY” was fun and, in my opinion, second only to the Hong Kong Science Museum (which is free on Wednesdays).
Sprite and her dad built this man and dubbed him COSI CARL.
Since my husband was a printer many years ago, he loved this old printing press.
Sprite’s favorite thing was this Morse Code Telegraph.
After COSI, we walked to Phillip’s and ate some Coneys. We even sat at the counter to get the full effect. This is all in the name of cultural experiences for Sprite, of course. It’s part of the Great American Field Trip we’re taking these two months. (wink)
When the rain stopped, we spent a day at The Columbus Zoo. We all agreed that the polar bears were a favorite.
And anything interactive with animals ranks high with Sprite. Here she is feeding nectar to lorikeets.
My favorite was the Humboldt penguins.
Oh, I’ve not had any Mexican food my whole time in Ohio. I’m starting to go through withdrawal. MUST…FIND… TACOS….

I love seeing America through your (and Sprite’s) eyes! My first thought when I read about the clouds was, well, yeah. Everyday! But then I read your comment about the gray skies in China. I see where you are drinking it all up! Is the haze pollution?
Thank you for reminding me to appreciate the little things.
Oh, and those hot dogs looked SO good!
blessings,
Sandwich
Jimmie,
It sounds like you all are having a great time during your visit. I’m glad you’ve been able to cram in a bunch of fun educational “field trips” while you’re here. I’m very disappointed that we weren’t able to find a time to get together while you were in Columbus. Before you leave there you should try to visit the Franklin Park Conservatory – lots of great flowers and butterflies, so I understand. Travel safe & enjoy your visit.
Blessings,
Karen H
Looks like you are all having a great time! We still haven’t made it to COSI even though it is just a couple hours away. Maybe this summer!
You’re in Ohio?!?!?! Come visit me! We’re about 40 minutes east of Columbus and we just went to the Zoo last Saturday. Glad you’re having a great time in the States.

We are in Pigeon Forge TN right now and it has rained a lot this week. However, when the skies are blue they are really blue. I hope you have a wonderful vacation.

That is funny about the sky. When we were in China we asked our guide if the smog was there all the time. She looked puzzled and said that yes it was always overcast, but that was not smog! Now that is one good propaganda job there
I’ve taken to lying flat on my back each time we go to the park. If I ignore my peripheral view I can just see nature. It’s the only time I get to experience that here. I look at the sky and watch the clouds and the birds. (We do have lots of haze here, but there’s blue too since we get so much sea breeze.) Glad you are getting in all your experiences.

Looks like a wonderful time in the USA!
And, I can’t imagine having to grind my own meat or make my own buns. Even after reading your blog for several years, I just can’t comprehend how different your life is overseas!
Enjoy your roadtrip!
So not fair! Pictures of blue skies, hamburgers and hot dogs, mentions of grilling and tacos! Oh well, we will be going back to the States in October. I now see we have much to look forward to!
So glad you are having such a good time back in the states.
Blessings
Diane
I was excited to read that you were in Tennessee and saw the Hermitage! We just studied Jackson and read all about his home on the Hermitage webpage. Was it worth the visit even with the house closed? Do they grow anything on all that farmland now? ….just curious….
Enjoy your continuing “Great American Field Trip!”

I’m glad you’re having such a great time in the U.S. We’re going to be in Columbus, OH at the end of the summer. We’ll have to check out the zoo and science museum.
Oh Jimmie! Looks like a great time is being had by all. I know how you feel about ‘normal’ everyday little things that others take for granted. I seem like an alien when I go home – I’m so excited about things that other take for granted! LOL!
I’m almost a little green too! Though, I must say that we just found a new AMAZING mexican restaurant near us. We went for tea last night and it was SCRUMMY!!!! It will be a new favourite – that’s for sure! Enjoy the blue skies! – Deedee
Looks like you are having SO much fun! Too many people take those beautiful blue skies for granted here!
I can’t believe how close you are to me. If you are driving through Northern Kentucky and see the Florence Ya’ll water tower, you are about 15 minutes from me. SO wave!!
Praying you continue to have a wonderful time and get your Mexican fix soon!
Looks like a lot of fun! We’re counting the days to our “Great American Field Trip” in July. It’s been six years since we were home (my youngest has never been to the US!); we almost don’t even know what to do! I’m enjoying hearing about your time there!!

Truly beautiful pictures. Where we live in Japan, the sky can be very blue. However, since we live in a city, we can’t really see many stars. So please look at the night sky for us!
Jimmie, Glad you and your family are enjoying the simple pleasures in your US travels. I like “seeing” it through your eyes because it can be easy to overlook the “little” things. We had a similar experience this past weekend while in IN enjoying the countryside, farmers fiels, horses and their foals, cows and their calves – does one’s heart good
I’m so glad that you all are having fun in the USA! Your post made me realize (again) how much we take for granted: even buying pre-made ground beef not to mention pre-formed hamburgers!
Blessings to you; enjoy your vacation!
Angela
You should try to get to the Creation Museum in Kentucky. Well worth the trip.
Yay for coney dogs (with onions- yum! even better with jalapenos.)!
I can’t imagine making my buns and grounding the beef… but I would if I had to. Hope you get some tacos, enchiladas and salsa soon! Makes my tummy grumble just thinking about it. We are having rice and bulgogi tonight for supper. Maybe I’ll have some cheesy goodness tomorrow.

I hope you all have bucketloads of great memories to take back to China with you…you know, while you are making all those hamburger buns.
