Book Review & Giveaway: Grammar Books from Reader’s Digest

In exchange for my honest review, Reader’s Digest books gave me two free grammar books, pictured above. These are wonderful, hardback books that I am pleased to add to our reference library.

At the end of this post is information about how you can win your own copies. So be sure to enter and spread the word.

The Books

The red book is Write (Or Is That “Right”?) Every Time: Cool Ways to Improve Your English by Lottie Stride.

This book would be suitable for upper elementary or middle school students. It has humorous illustrations and a modern font. All the basics of English are covered: parts of speech, parts of the sentence, spelling, and punctuation. It is a quick overview, just enough to jog your memory or provide a sample sentence. There are no exercises or assignments. This is not a textbook but a simple reference book.

The white book is My Grammar and I . . . Or Should That Be Me?: How to Speak and Write It Right by J.A. Wines.

This book is a bit more advanced and more traditional than the other. I would recommend it for middle schoolers (and maybe on into 9th grade). There are no illustrations, but the text is laid out nicely with plenty of headings, subheadings, shaded areas, and offset boxes.

The topics are comparable to Write (Or Is That “Right”?) Every Time: spelling, parts of speech, sentences, and punctuation. Oddly enough, the book has no index. So you have to rely on the table of contents to find what you need.

My Grammar and I is more of a living book than the Write (Or Is That “Right”?) Every Time. It has more commentary and quirky details about the grammar being addressed.

How I Plan to Use These Books

I will certainly have these on the shelf for quick reference. I don’t expect to stop using our Write Source which is far more comprehensive, but sometimes having a “second opinion” is helpful.

Additionally, I think that I will assign sections of My Grammar and I for Sprite to read and narrate back to me, writing her own example sentences to illustrate the facts.

Easy Canvas Prints gave me a free 10×8″ canvas to review and another free canvas to the lucky winner of this giveaway.

Our last family portrait has been over a year ago, so I chose to use a photo of the three of us for my canvas print. We took a casual shot in the backyard because frugal is good and casual fits our style.

After some minor edits to my selected photo, I visited the Easy Canvas Prints website to make my canvas. The process is ridiculously easy. I love how all through the ordering process there are clear preview images. It’s easy to make changes, undo them, and try again without having to re-do steps or upload the image again.

When my canvas was shipped, I got an email notifying me. And then, voila, the package was here. The canvas was wrapped in plastic and then in brown packing paper for more cushion inside its cardboard box.

The canvas can be hung or displayed as is or framed. Because mine is so small, I thought it looked best on a table top, so I used a simple plate stand to hold it up.

Would you like to read a book that sets your sights on heaven, fills you with hope, and soothes your grief over lost loved ones? I just finished reading Heaven Revealed by Paul Enns, and I have a copy to give away.

The full name of the book is Heaven Revealed: What Is It Like? What Will We Do? . . . And 11 Other Things You’ve Wondered About. It lives up to it’s title with thirteen chapters, each about a different aspect of heaven. Here is a sampling:

Where is heaven?
What kind of body will we have?
What will life be like in heaven?
What will heaven and the new earth look like?
What will we do in heaven?
What will our relationship with others be like?
What will our relationship with God be like?

Dr. Enns’ motivation in writing this book is clear from the very first pages. After his wife Helen passed away, he found himself captivated with thoughts of heaven and being reunited with her. It seems that the questions he addresses in each chapter are ones that he himself wondered.

He answers the questions with a barrage of scripture from both Old and New Testaments. He doesn’t usually quote the scripture; instead he gives a parenthetical reference so that the reader can reference the Bible.

I like how each chapter includes a snapshot listing of the answers to each question. I could get an overview of how he was going to address each element of heaven and then zero in on the points that most intrigued me.

At first I was seriously concerned that the main point of his book was just that we will be reunited with believing loved ones in heaven. His grief over the loss of Helen is repeated over and over in the initial chapters. It almost seemed that he was more happy to see Helen that to see Jesus! But as I continued reading, I saw more focus on God’s glory and less on his own personal loss.

I admit that I have not suffered the death of someone very close to me, so the prospect of heavenly reunions doesn’t speak to my heart as much as it does to the author and to many of you who have. I do look forward to seeing God face to face and consider this the highest reward of heaven. To focus unduly on our loved ones over our Creator and Redeemer would be wrong. But I assure you that taking this book as a whole, it is a very balanced approach to the joys of heaven.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. It was a fast read that encouraged me to continue persevering in the hope of heaven. It is good to take our eyes off the sorrow and distractions of earthly living and refocus on our heavenly home. There is a rich reward ahead of me! What a wonderful motivation for living life to the fullest.
