Art Log: Keeping Track of the Art We Study

September 19, 2012 By Jimmie Quick 10 Comments

For our artist study, we are using Harmony Fine Arts plans plus an art app (for iPad) called Art Authority recommended by Stephanie. I really appreciate the convenience of having our art lessons mapped out, even with links to various works of art so that I can do it all with my iPad.

The art app, wow! (Thanks, Stephanie! I love it!) An abundance of art work right at your fingertips. Perfect for artist study. I highly recommend it.  And I love it when I see Emma getting drawn in, clicking on links, and exploring deeper and deeper into the different art galleries on the app.

But one thing I realized we need this year is a log for the art we study. Although we have never taken that approach before, I feel that for eighth grade it is a good way to document and remember each piece that observe. Here is the art log I created. You can download it for free.

I made it in two formats — one with six rows for a six week period and one with nine rows for a nine week period. The columns allow for the year, the title, the setting of the painting, the subject of the painting, and any action portrayed.  In addition I made some general note taking pages that complement the style of the log in case you  need more room.

I hope that this log helps you with your Charlotte Mason artist study. It is really simple to study a single work of art each week (or each day).

Brilliant – this really fills a need I wasn’t even aware of until now. And got me thinking that something similar might help with music appreciation, which we struggle with more than art. Might be my weekend project!

This is perfect! Thank you. I like the “setting” and “action portrayed” boxes. I can even use this with my Kinder boy. Excellent!

I love your system of a grid to observe painting. It will teach children to pay attention to specific things on each painting and it can be adapted with different column headings. It’s a great way to make children aware of art and they will feel more comfortable growing up loving art.
