Harmony Fine Arts Review –Degas & Prokofiev

September 23, 2010 By Jimmie Quick 6 Comments

Barb sent me a copy of her Autumn 2010 Art & Music Appreciation Plans to review.

In a word — fantastic!

She makes me laugh. She said that I do such great artist and composer studies that I wouldn’t need such a plan.

Well, Barb, I think your plan is wonderfully laid out and I do plan to use it this fall. Why wouldn’t I? You’ve already done all the legwork for me. Not using it would be like refusing someone to come to my home and prepare a delicious dinner for my family.

If you want some direction for your artist study and composer study, this product is a great help. You don’t have to do any planning or hunting. Just click, print, and go. Oh, and it costs only $3.25, so this is really affordable.

Degas and Prokofiev are tied together loosely with a ballet theme. Degas often painted ballerinas, and Prokofiev composed music for ballet productions.

DEGAS

Besides step by step directions for the lessons, there are six full color art prints with a notebooking page for each. (Don’t you hear a sigh of relief? No scouring the internet for images. Barb has already done that.) Three of them are ballet related, so don’t worry that this study isn’t suitable for boys. It is. I’ve cut out a sneak peek of a notebooking page to give you an idea of what it looks like.

In addition, you will find coloring pages for four of the six art prints. There is also a notebooking page for Degas where you can record your overall impressions of his works. Barb has given you follow-up activities, links, suggested living books, and a materials list.

PROKOFIEV

For the music component, you will need Internet access to complete the four weeks of assignments Barb has laid out. There is a mix of online MP3s, You Tube videos (carefully screened, of course), and printable pages.

Also there are two attractive Prokofiev notebooking pages that she designed herself. Here is a sneak peek.

The study guide includes questions to guide your listening times and even suggestions for an optional fifth week of study.

You can purchase the study via Paypal at Barb’s blog.

What a wonderful review! Thanks Jimmie for your perspective on my artist and composer ebook. You really captured the essence of what I was hoping the plans would do for families….make art and music appreciation reachable and easy to get started.

    Thanks again,
    Barb

We have been using the artist study for 2 weeks now (already had something going with a composer study) and my children whine when I say we’re done with it for the day. When I bring it out they shout, “Yeah! It’s time for our art time.” This is the first time we’ve consistently done artist study. So easy and very affordable to purchase. Keep up the good work, Barb.

I bought this study based on your review. We are thoroughly enjoying it!! As a “good” 🙂 homeschooling mom, I always wanted to incorporate and music study but after our co-op dissolved I had a hard time implementing. This study is terrific, everything laid out for me which is awesome !!! I’ll definitely be looking for more when we finish this one
