I’ve discovered one thing that I really don’t like about the Kindle.
It’s cold.
Holding cold metal and plastic is a lot colder to the hands than a paper book. I may have to start wearing gloves to read in bed. Brrrr….
But so far, this is the only thing I don’t like about it. So I guess that I still love it.
[If I had central heating, it probably wouldn’t be an issue. I’m wearing my wool socks and wool thermals already.]
How have we used the Kindle recently? We read King Lear from Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare on the Kindle. Then Sprite did some Hands-on Shakespeare with puppets from Nadene’s templates at Practical Pages. In the picture, she’s in her tent, preparing for the show.
We are enjoying reading stories about Ancient Greece to go with our study in school on Ancient Greece. We are reading about Perseus at the moment and the boys are enjoying his adventures greatly! Yeah for the Kindle!!! :o)
When my Dh got me my Kindle he also bought a lovely felt lined leather cover for it. It makes it great to carry with me in my handbag because it is protected and I don’t need to worry about it getting damaged in my bag. But it also takes care of the ‘holding cold metal and plastic’ issue too! It feels like holding a book with a nice leather bound cover and just not having to turn the pages. LOL!
Sounds like you need to ask for some leather Kindle covers to be sent over for Christmas……… (wink, wink ;o)
I have a case, but it’s the kind you pull the Kindle OUT of to use. I didn’t want the kind that had a cover to flap over. It felt awkward to me. But now I’m thinking my Kindle needs a summer wardrobe and a winter wardrobe!
We don’t have a Kindle but I did get the socks! Had them brought in from the USA last summer- fantastic!
Sandy,
I’m glad you like the socks!
Get a cover already!!! I was very precious with our Kindle until I got it a leather cover… Now I toss it in our bag and off we go… I don’t mind when and where the kids use it… peace of mind!!! And we read everything on our Kindle!!! Totally totally love it!!! It’s like having a library on my handbag!!!
I bet there are some frame style covers for the Kindle, like for iPhones, that don’t have a flapping cover. Or you could make one – you and Sprite are so crafty!
Wow – those paper puppets look fabulous! Sprite has coloured them in so beautifully. I’m delighted that she could enjoy her Shakespearean play. (Thanks again for the link!)
Of course I would have NO idea about cold living here!
But…
I have a silicone case/skin for mine (cost all of $3 or something outrageous like that) and I LOVE it… I’d think it would help with the cold, but another cool thing about the silicone (besides the CHEAP factor) is I can sit leaning back with my knees up and it will perch there on my legs (the silicone providing the non-slip surface!) it’s AWESOME. I was just discovering this today as I was reading A Child’s Geography of the World to all my chillin’s…
🙂
still loving my kindle…

I have a leather cover for mine–the cheapest one offered, I think? I got it so the kindle wouldn’t break if I dropped it. However, since the cover doesn’t snap or zipper shut, the kindle still could possible break if it fell the right way…..
It always remains in the case. It clicks in.
I do have a case. It’s a neoprene case that zips shut. I use it for storage and carrying. But when I read my Kindle, I pull it out.
We have Kindles. They are so great, especially for us living in China. We have some silicone “skin” for ours. We ordered them from E-bay while we were in the US this summer. They were pretty cheap and they came from China. You might look and see if they can mail them to you. Even with the skin on, my Kindle still fits in my zipper case when I want to take it in my bag.
I love reading e-books on my iPad. I bought a soft cover it so I don’t feel the cold. Perhaps you could knit one? Ha! By the way, I’m going to have to show my daughter that cupcake hat in the sidebar. She’ll want to make it!
So what have been your and your daughter’s favorite books on the kindle?
It looks like you have the larger version? That’s the one I want to get, the Kindle DX. I think it’s 9.5 inches vs. 6.something. I’ll have to keep in mind the cold…maybe look for a skin. Thanks for the info!
The one I got opens like a book cover, not flapped over the top. Those would drive me nuts! This is like a ‘real’ book cover so it feels really natural to hold and it can fold back all the way open too. The kindle clicks into it so it can’t fall out, I just keep it in there all the time. :o)
