Used Book Sale Bargains

May 20, 2011 By Jimmie Quick 14 Comments

On Monday night, our local homeschool group had a book sale. A lot of what was there was Abeka curriculum (which sort of pains my CM soul), but I did find some excellent living books here and there.

Here are my finds.

novels
Novels

Novels

  • How God Stopped the Pirates
  • The Tinker’s Daughter A story of John Bunyan’s daughter. This will go wonderfully with the Pilgrim’s Progress study that Charlene sent me.

Picture Book

Picture Book

  • Temple Cat I am a sucker for picture books, history books, and cats. What can I say?
shakespeare finds
Shakespeare Books

Shakespeare

  • No Fear Shakespeare: Much Ado About Nothing
  • Bard of Avon: the Story of William Shakespeare by Diane Stanley
  • Tales from Shakespeare by Marcia Williams This is probably my favorite find of the sale. Sprite enjoys Shakespeare anyway. These retellings are done in a cartoon style with panels and dialog.
geography books
Lilving Geography Books

Geography

  • Legends and Leagues I’ve been wanting this since I read Cindy West’s review.
  • Mapping the Unknown
poetry with CD
Introduction to Poetry

Poetry

  • A Child’s Introduction to Poetry This book & CD combination looks so good! I will be sure to review this one after we use a few lessons from it. The first part looks at different forms of poetry. The second half is about famous poets.

Have you bought any good used books lately?

Just wanted to mention there is a book similar to the poetry one for music/instruments/orchestra. It’s on my shelf waiting for a few weeks to enjoy it with the kids. It is called The Story of the Orchestra and it’s on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Story-Orchestra-Listen-Instruments-Composers/dp/1579121489/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1305905996&sr=8-3 for less than $14.00 right now. I got mine from someone else used though…

We just got back from our library book sale and got the following hardcovers for .25 each!:
The Whingdingdillly by Bill Peet (We just love Bill Peet’s stories and illustrations and have a collection of his books)
Pierre-Auguste Renoir by Ernest Raboff (We collect his Art for Children series and didn’t have this one)
Peter Pan compiled by Cooper Edens (We collect classics compiled by Cooper Edens – such beautiful illustrations)

So, only 3 books but ones we will treasure!

We just read Julius Caesar from the Tales from Shakespeare book! It’s not a good read-aloud–you really have to read it yourself and look at the pictures and read all the comments in the margins to appreciate it. We also read Julius Caesar from Beautiful Stories from Shakepeare by Nesbitt and the girls liked that very well. I may send them back to the cartoon version now that they know the story and they will appreciate it more.

Legends and Leagues was a great snag, too! That’s been on my wish list for ages. Please review it after you’ve used it so I can know if I should move it up on my list.

My latest used-book finds were two Crispin books for next year (by Avi).

    Thanks for sharing!

    Blessings,
    Sandwich

Lucky finds… we love that poetry book so much, and have played the cd enough for everyone to have a good variety of poems ingrained in their heads and ready to recite at the drop of a hat… and Marcia Williams is to die for… we bought a collection of her classic “comics” lately… not easy to read-a-loud at all… but really great fun to read.

Jealous…I tried to stay clear of the 25 cent bin at the library. Just loaded up the Kindle with old books instead. 🙂

I have heard good things about the No Fear Shakespeare series- in fact I used their online version of Othello for my recent college paper!

We had our used booksale back in March and I got some great living books about Explorers and Men of Science, Men of God.

We have the book “A Child’s Intro to Poetry.” My oldest two are 7 & 5 and L-O-V-E this book. They will listen to the CD that goes with the book and read along a hundred times without growing bored or uninterested.

We have How God Used a Thunderstorm and really like it. My boys always ask me to read a little bit more before bed.

Cindy West is such a wealth of information and inspiration.
