Sleeping on Bamboo Tiles

June 28, 2009 By Jimmie Quick 11 Comments

In the sticky summer months, lots of people pull out the bamboo tiled mats for their beds. They allow for some air to circulate, and the tiles remain cool to the touch no matter the temperature.  It comes in a huge “rice bag.”

This is the mat I bought for my husband’s side of the bed.

I find that they pinch me, so I prefer a soft mattress, but my husband says the bamboo tiles are wonderfully cool and comfortable. To each his own. I’m happy because if he‘s cooler that means that we can compromise on a slightly warmer temperature on the air conditioner.

Here’s a close up of the mat. Thick plastic cords hold it all together. It’s quite amazing how the things we first marveled at seven years ago when we first got to China (such as sleeping on bamboo tiles) are now a part of our daily lives.

I had never heard of such a thing– very interesting!

In Korea, we’d sleep on yo’s… pretty much just a rolled up, thin cushion to set on the floor. What would keep you cool in summer and warm in winter were the shiny, satin blankets.

Those look so interesting. I’m tempted to try to find one for my husband because he is freezing me out of the bedroom!

Exactly! He can stay cool while I stay warm.

Very interesting, but I’m with you…a nice soft mattress for me. I just don’t think I could be comfortable on that; of course, I can’t say positively since I haven’t tried it out. Would be wild to discover that it is actually preferable!

why don’t they have those in the US? I think they’re fabulous. I’m usually cold and my husband is warm. This is a nice compromise..make him sleep on that!

I always learn something while reading your blog.

I think you have the wrong side on. The side that should be facing the body is the darker, glossier side (as shown in the first picture). you seem to have the reverse side on.

@ Apple — Yes, you’re absolutely right. The other side has little pandas and other designs on it. We prefer the plain side. 🙂
Crazy Americans — we care about the appearance. LOL.

I know—it’s crazy how fast you adjust to a different way of sleeping! Since moving here, I’ve adjusted to the super thin mattresses (literally an inch thick), and then just a quilt on top of a wooden frame. The body adjusts so quickly!

    Hi Jimmie,

Do you know where or which website I can buy one for my husband?! Do you remember how much you paid for yours?

    Thank you!

I’m sorry, I don’t remember. I’d say it was in the $20 range. I’m sure you can find it on Amazon. Amazon has everything.
